Ear Muffs

Wearing ear muffs provide effective hearing protection in the cold, rain, snow, hail, sleet and noisy environments.

Chester Greenwood of Farmington, Maine, invented ear muffs in 1873, when he was 15. He became frustrated at trying to protect his ears from the bitter cold while he was ice skating. He tried wrapping his head in a scarf, but it was too bulky and itchy. Chester then invented two ear shaped loops from wire and asked his grandmother to sew fur onto the loops. He improved the muffs by adding a steel band to hold them in place. Thus, ear muffs were born, patented and made at Greenwood's Ear Protector Factory.

Ear muffs are warmers for your ears that usually fit over your head. However, there are ear protection ear muffs, specifically made for the purpose of cutting out noise. These ear muffs are generally worn in factories and other work areas or while hunting or shooting. Ear muffs are made for people with and without hearing problems. People with hearing aids should also consider wearing ear muffs over their hearing aids to prevent them from getting wet as well as to keep their ears warm and dry.

Ear muffs have several advantages over other types of ear protection, plugs and devices. Ear muffs are easy to adjust, remove and replace. This makes them ideal for wearing intermittently. Ear muffs are also more likely to provide you with better ear protection because they are designed to cover the entire ear. Ear muffs are also more sanitary than inserting ear plugs because they are worn on the outside the ear. This allows you to share your ear muffs with other people. Ear muffs are usually more comfortable than other types of ear devices as you don't have to insert anything into your ear canals. Ear muffs are available in various styles, designs, colors, materials, shapes and sizes. Make sure your ear muffs are comfortable and fit you properly.
